Bermuda Delivery

Bermuda sits alone in the North Atlantic — roughly 650 nautical miles offshore, with nothing between it and the U.S. East Coast but open ocean and the Gulf Stream. It is one of the most popular bluewater destinations for East Coast sailors, and one of the passages most often underestimated. SEASCORPS delivers your sailboat, catamaran, or powerboat to Bermuda with the offshore preparation and weather judgment the crossing demands.

The Route

Most Bermuda deliveries depart from the Chesapeake region — typically Hampton Roads or similar staging ports — putting the passage at approximately 650 nautical miles of open water. There are no intermediate stops, no inlets to duck into, and no margin for a vessel that is not genuinely passage-ready.

The Gulf Stream crossing is the first critical decision: timing, positioning, and routing relative to the current can determine whether the passage is fast and comfortable or rough and slow. A northwest wind opposing the north-flowing Stream builds steep, confused seas quickly. We wait for the right window — not the convenient one.

Once clear of the Stream, the passage to Bermuda is typically a reaching or running sail in the prevailing southwest winds, but the North Atlantic is not predictable, and systems can develop or accelerate. Multi-day offshore watches, careful navigation, and the ability to manage a vessel through deteriorating conditions are what this passage asks of a crew.

Why SeasCorps for This Route

Captain Mark Gervais holds a USCG Master license and brings 35 years of command experience and more than 25,000 nautical miles of offshore passagemaking. He handles sail and power vessels in the 30–65 ft range and carries current CPR, AED, First Aid, and Safety at Sea certifications. Captain Mark has served as Captain and Navigator on nine Newport-Bermuda races.

A Bermuda delivery is not a coastal hop, and it is planned accordingly — from vessel readiness assessment before departure to Gulf Stream strategy, weather routing, and crew management underway. For owners who plan to sail Bermuda themselves in the future, Mark can incorporate passage instruction into the delivery, covering offshore watchkeeping, weather interpretation, and bluewater seamanship.
